From Enrollment to Graduation
The period from enrollment to graduation at a Driving Camp is 14~16 days for a Car with an Automatic Transmission and 15~17 days for a Manual.
However, depending on the driving school and the time of year, there may be some delays, so please check the calendar on each driving school's page.
The graduation dates indicated in the Calendar are estimated.
You will graduate that day only if everything goes smoothly and you pass all the tests on the first try! In case of exam failure or for other reasons, the graduation date may be postponed! We recommend leaving 3-5 days free in your schedule after Driving Camp, just in case.
Generally, students are not allowed to return home during Driving Camp. However, in an emergency, you may be allowed to return home temporarily after consultation with the school.
General Flow
Day 1: Starting Day
【STEP 0】
Arrival at the designated Meeting Place
Do not be late! If you are late, the school might not allow you to enter on this day!
Traffic may be disrupted in lousy weather, so make sure to leave early. Before departure, check that you haven't forgotten anything!
【STEP 1.1】
School Enrolment ・ Orientation
Admission procedures: Certificate of Residence (住民票), ID card, and other necessary documents will be checked.
【STEP 1.2】
Aptitude tests
Your vision, hearing, and motor skills will be tested. A Regular Car License requires a minimum visual acuity of 0.3 for one eye and 0.7 or more for both eyes (glasses and contact lenses can be used).
【STEP 2.1】
First Stage Training - Introductory Class
First, you need to get the basic knowledge about driving. If you missed the introductory class (arrived late, etc.), then you will not be able to take any further lessons. That is why it is so important to arrive on time!
Day 1-6
【STEP 2.2】
First Stage Training
At the First Stage of Training there will be a minimum of 10 hours of lectures, and 12* hours of driving lessons. In the First Stage of Driving Training, students learn basic driving skills while driving on the course road equipped on the school site.
Before the Official Exams, there will be Written (効果測定) and Driving (みきわめ) Mock Tests.
※There 12h of driving lessons for an AT Car and 15h for MT.
Day 7
【STEP 3.1】
Learner’s Permit - Official Driving Exam
After you have completed the first stage of training and passed the trial driving test, there will be the first Official Driving Exam.
You will drive around the school's driving course with the examiner in the passenger seat and (maybe) other examinees in the back seat.
【STEP 3.2】
Learner’s Permit - Official Written Exam
First Official Written Exam (仮免学科試験) contains 50 questions.
To pass, you must answer at least 45 questions correctly.
【STEP 3.3】
Issuance of a Learner’s Permit
After issuing your Learner’s Permit, you will be able to drive with an instructor on the public roads outside of the school venue.
Day 7-13
【STEP 4】
Second Stage Training
The Second Stage of theoretical training is 16 hours. There is time to learn driving theory and to learn how to give first aid.
During the 19 hours of driving lessons, students, in addition to on-site training (parking, etc.), will learn how to drive on real roads, and highways, and driving at night.
There will also be a Written and a Driving Mock Test before the Final Official Exam.
Day 14
【STEP 5.1】
Official Final Driving Exam
After you've completed the second stage of training and passed both mock tests, there will be an Official Final Driving Exam.
With the examiner, you will drive outside the school on public roads. Your skills would be tested: whether you can drive safely, and adjust to surrounding traffic. Also in the school's venue your parallel parking, turning, etc. skills will be tested.
Once you have passed, you will receive a "Graduation Certificate". With this certificate, you will be exempt from the Official Driving Test at the License Center.
【STEP 5.2】
School Graduation
To celebrate the end of the Driving Camp experience, a short graduation ceremony will be held. Thank you for your hard work!
Before departure home, check that you haven't forgotten anything!
Anytime within 1 year after Graduation
【STEP 6】
Official Final Written Exam
With a Graduation Certificate and a Learner’s Permit, come to your Local Licence Center (make sure it matches your official address) and take the Official Final Written Exam.
This test contains 100 items. You need to get 90 points or more to pass.
【STEP 7】
Issuance of Driver's License
Once you've passed the Final Written Exam, your Japanese Driving License will be issued the same day! Congratulations!
